Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
Okay been playing again
im a fan of shiny bits so ive started tidying up the bay!
all the above are made from polished stainless steal.
Another little "accidental mod" was a new throttle body i replaced the TB because the T.P.S was faulty and the only one i had spare from another T5 was one that didnt have a low speed restricter on the flap!
Thinking nothing of it i took it for a spin to find it transformed the drivability!, the flap is the there to tone down the turbo and throttle response at certain speeds and throttle positions.
The turbo comes in much earlier and on light throttle there is far more torque available so its made it so much better to "cruise" around in
After i drove the car i went on the net to find it was a common mod to remove the restricter so im a happy chappy there!
here is a pic of the old "restricted" flap, notice that at low engine speeds only one half of the TB is opened and even at wide open throttle the plastic restricter still causes a restriction.

Thanks
the parts are a new range of goodies from a guy on Ebay, he normally makes stainless stuff for Fords but he has seen the 850 engine bits are easy to make and people arte going mad bidding a fortune for the parts but i simply asked for a buy it now price for the got all 5 covers for cheap
And yes those throttle body where designed to calm down the drive a little and make thikngsd a little less aggressive
thanks

lol, it all ways 4kgs all in but with the Volvo im not to fused it pulls up hill with 5 in the car like a missile and i can honestly say i can never really tell im carrying the extra weight
Its odd because i always remember when i had 5 seats full in the Cinq it made a huuuuge difference due to the smaller engine.
thanks
Jason

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
Okay. a few little updates
firstly im still in need of a turbo re-con due to leaky seals and the TDO4 16T id hoped to find on one of our scrap cars turned out to be a 15G same as what ive already got! and not in the best of condition either.
I decided to strip the new spare turbo and rebuild it only to find the compressor wheel was damaged so i stripped the old buggered turbo that used to be on mine to see if that was salvageable but the compressor and turbine have made contact with the housing through thrust play so that was game over......
With no usable compressor wheel its left me with two choices, 1. simply pay to have mine reconditioned or 2. rebuild the the other 2 turbos using the bets bits from both to make one good one with a buggered compressor and then pay to have it balanced...
So i went for 2!!, using the best bits from both old turbo ive out together one that is worth rebuilding so all i need now is a rebuild kit and a new compressor wheel.
Here is a few pics some of you may find interesting on how to dissect a TD03/4/5 series turbo
Here we have one TD04 15G turbo, heavy thrust play and damaged compressor and turbine but it has the best core so i had to strip it -
Next i remove the waste gate actuator and bits -
Next to split the turbine housing form the centre housing you have to remove the V-band clamp with a 10mm -
Here you can see the turbine wheel which has been hot!, in the hands of the last owner it saw a hard life and the turbo was staved of oil !
Here you can see light marking from the compressor contacting the housing -
After removing the compressor housing i was left with the core -
Then i remove the 8mm on the compressor which is a left hand thread!, not marking the wheel due to needing a nwe one so i cant get away with not having the turbo balanced -
Next its time to remove the clip holding the thrust bearing and oil deflector and bearing on the compressor side -
Then the using a screwdriver carefully remove the deflector containing the bearing -
Which allows access to the the thrust bearing -
Then remove the second journal bearing from the core and the two rubber seals and there we go stripped!
I then used the best bits from both to make a turbo ready for a recon
After this i then noticed ive finally found something thats taller than Matt !!!!! check it out!!!! -
Matt looking not to happy at his lack of heigh against the rather large 850 bonnet haha.
And finally a few random pics with the new grill on
thanks

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
that is a very nice post mate, maybe you should actually turn that post into a how to guide and start a guides section and we can all contribute with guides to things we have done on our cars, ie engine swaps, suspension mods or set-ups, turbo rebiulds etc etc

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
Hello guys and girls, just a little update (boring one at that)
money and time have just about put a stop to any progress at the moment with anything so the Volvo has simply been driven
I spoke to Midlands and arranged for my turbo to be sent of and fitted with a 360 degree thrust bearing and a TD04 16T compressor and wheel to make it into a suitable hybrid for a sensible and usable 280bhp with a map on it but then i ran out of funds so as soon as the money returns thatll be the next step.
Im tempted to have a map done by the guy who mapped Ricky Polo TDI and Dannys Polo TDI, he seems to be okay and he's up for playing around to see what he can do. Ill probably go fpr a map at 16psi rather than the more aggressive 17-18psi maps more suited to the 18T and 19T turbo which i originally planned tot go for....
other than that its just being maintained and cleaned and continuing to drink fuel like the QE2!!!!!!!!!!!!
ow and BTW the wheels are going Gun Metal Grey soon!!
thanks
