Re: Volvo 850 T-5
Got down to business recently and cured a few issues ive had for some time!
Since i got the T5 its had a weird power delivery, sometimes it felt really flat and other days it felt immense! with in-between feeling nothing special, ive always felt its had more to offer caompared wiht driving other 240-250bhp T5's at work.
It turned out its been running far to lean for two reasons. 1. the airflow meter was faulty so ive fitted a new one and 2. there was a bad vac leak on the intake hose from the turbo after the MAF which ive sorted so the air coming in is now being metered and accounted for correctly! and the ECU can now determine what the razed boost pressure is at.
I also found something ive suspected for some time and thats a boost leak, it turned out to the recirculating dump valve which had a buggered diaphragm!! so its been leaking boost back into the intake hose causing boost to tail right off at higher revs loosing power and also causing alot of lag and fueling issues!, i replaced it with a second hand unit that tested ok!
The car now genuinely drives like the T5 reputation says it should!! Its boosting higher and holding boost far better as revs climb, spooling up quicker and on lighter throttle giving far far more drive-ability with torque down low becoming very evident through the wheel (these engine were always praised on flat torque curves and i never felt that in mine until now) and the power through the revs is far smoother. Its even managed to scrape another 5mpg average on the work runs so im happy as can be with this and the car has felt consistently smooth and rapid since i did the work last Sat!!
When the car was last on the rollers it was said that the fueling was "odd and all over the place", seems that i found out why!
Just needs a CTS now then ill be sending the turbo off for Hybrid treatment and a re-map i bloody well cant wait!
Thanks
Jason

guessing game...............
They are becoming rare as time goes on, they came of an iconic 850 T5-R, they are fully refurbished and sprayed in black....

I reckon a colour change just a few shades lighter will be needed once funds/whatever allow but nice one, get some tyre shine on as said the other day ;-)

Thank you mate, its running 250bhp/260lb/sf @ 12.5psi....although a boost leak has caused a drop in boost recently though hence me buying the new bigger turbo should be seeing 280-300bhp @ 16-17psi soon enough with the new turbo, a map and bigger injectors

Your right on mate they are indeed 17" TITAN alloys which ive wanted for ages!, just need an R bumper which i missed out on recently , anyway they are fully refurbished and sprayed in black (most likely going O.E grey/anthracite)
Problem is they are fitted with 225/45 tyres which are not o.e meaning they scrub a little duwe to be lowered 40mm (which you can really tell now!!) they are supposed to run 205/45 tyres so ill have to see how it goes but they are wrapped in Avon sports rubber that are rated highly for putting the torque down in the wet which this car needs big time.

haha, got the wheels today and indeed they were all polished and freshly sprayed with mucky tyres......stuck out like a soar thumb hit my a sledge hammer!!.....the tyre shine came out in micro seconds!
Ow and the picture of the 850 T5-R / 850 R happens to be my dream 850!, that colour with those wheels lol. But i saw mine today.....black against the dark blue, for me personally i thought it looked awesome and btw its now made the car looked very low! (arche gap wise), the new wheels really fill the arches right up and show the cars lowered 40mm which im chuffed about
Ill post up pictures once ive washed the car because as it is ive got really shiny black wheels and a loppy car haha
thanks for the comments guys

Re: Volvo 850 T-5
Lol, they are catching on full lock a little but its the actual inner edge of the wheel arche itself thats catching sadly and id prefer to leave the arches if possible.
Thanks

Re: Volvo 850 T-5
Little update for the T-5
As yet the new 16T turbo hasn't gone on because ive getting together a few other goodies for it and it needs a few bits for the MOT which it passed with advisor's last week.
It needs a new wishbones on the N/S due to play in the ball joint, hand brake needs adjusting and a shocker top needs doing but all in all thats fine by me for a 170,000 mile car
Ive also taken delivery of a T5-R ECU which is hopefully going on today, the ECU increases the stock power from 225 to 240bhp and torque also, it also features a better map for running higher boost because the ECU raises stock boost form 9.6psi to 10.5psi and allows for better fueling control at raised boost levels using the MBC without a map for now.
Turbo should be on soon then ill be running it at stock boost governed by the new T5R ecu and taking it to Nobles for a check up. it should see 250bhp/260lb/sf @ 10.5 psi plus with this setup compared to the 12.3psi previous which achieved 245bhp/258lb/sf. Then once it all looks in good health and funds allow it ill have it mapped for 17psi hopefully it'll feel like the devil has just entered the car!!
thanks

Re: Volvo 850 T-5
just noticed, you haven't reversed the boost piping, its meant to give more stable boost iirc, i know all the lads on voc.com recomened it as the first upgrade after a poly stabliser mount

I ran reverse cooler pipes when i first got the car mate, it caused boost spikes and more aggressive fuel cut due to the shorter route and cooler air. So i removed it aiming to fit it back on when its properly mapped etc.
