My Volvo 850 T5 !
Right.........
Ive just bought this of a mate of mine who i work with
Its a Volvo 850 T5 2.3 20v turbo ESTATE lol, the car has been brought to out workplace since it was new so the car has a full service history and one lady owner from new before my mate got his hands on it!
Sadly the previous owner (My mate) ran the engine out of oil and put a con-rod through the block!!, i have a new low mileage engine ready to go in to get it on the road again!!! as i couldn't see this car go to waste its a spot on car! hehe
Its packed full of goodies like heated seats etc etc and it attracts little attention to people who dont know what it is
as stock the car makes 225bhp and 221 lb/sf but its been tweaked and it goes like stink!
here is the current spec list -
Custom 2.5" power-flow turbo back exhaust with decat (5 cylinder sounds AWSOME!!!!)
Cone air filter
Boost turned up from 10psi too 13psi
Set-up @ Noble Motorsport to run 13psi
Reverse intercooler piping conversion
Lowered 40mm all round
Late shape V70 T5 rear lights
245bhp and 258lb/sf of torque
I drove the car on the above set-up and it was foookin quick!, much quicker than the later 240bhp V70 T5's due to the masses of extra torque.
Ill be fitting a few new oil seals etc to the new engine and all in a weekend it'll be back and ready for the road again!
plans for the future -
Fit fuel cur defender and raise boost too 15-16psi/or fit BSR stage one chip (260-270bhp and 280/300lb/sf)
Fit my NOS kit
And fit my W.I kit thats coming of the Cinq
And that's basically it for now, these 2.3 20v engine are very tunable and 320-340bhp is quit easy to get on stock rods and pistons although above 300bhp the stock turbo and injectors have to go!.
With a BSR MAP/Chip, exahaust and airfilter these engines will see around 290bhp and i was happy to find that water methanol injection will see these cars to 300bhp nicely with much needed reliability gains. Over 330bhp there is risk of rod failure although with the correct turbo choice and tuning they have been seen upto 400bhp.
So im about 300 quid away from 300bhp with this car
I used to hate these cars before i started working at Volvo, all i new is they where quick but they a re safe, reliable, subtle and discrete with a cracking monster engine under the bonnet so i cant wait to get it one the road and start cruising

Thanks Ryan
good thing is i know these cars inside out because im working on them every day so the engine swap is nothing really lol.
The Punto will have to go sadly
And ill never be able to treat the engine in the T5 to whats its capable of but i should be able to get 300-320bhp without to much fus (clutch depending)......there a re loads of 400-500bhp monster retirement wagons out there though lol.
thanks

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
i love the 850 estates and would happily have another one if it weren't for the fact that they are terrible on fuel, my old 2.0 20v was actually rather nippy considering it was 140ish and 70million tons lol but only did an average of 25mpg (but i had a very heavy right foot at the time
what are the T-5's like on fuel as the T-5's can be picked up for next to nothing these days
alos mate what are the D5's like on juice???

they actually weight only around 1300kgs mate lol
as for fuel theyll do 35ish on a run, 26mpg round town
And the D5's are great mate, between 45-55mpg and they do them in both 163 and 185bhp great engine!
thanks

Reu-uk wrote:is that RWD? sounds good plans though
unfotinatley not, the 850 was kind of aimed at the high budget corprate era that was 90's BTCC and as such was FWD but there were a few AWD versions but they had to make do with the same spec engines as the FWD, but they have really torquey 5 pot motors which makes them amazing sleeper cars
the last volvo's to role out that were RWD were the 900's and 700's of the mid/late 90's

Definitely going for the chip now mate, been reading up on these engine and ive got a 250 quid BSR chip and my W.I in mind, an easy 290-300bhp to be had there and a shed load of torque.
James_6N2 wrote:lol bit of a change to small fiats your used to
Ow yeah lol, but i drive these everyday so im used to them lol
Mitch wrote:I smell a new project in the making !

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
He did indeed Rick i must say ive genuinely picked up a huge bargin !! ive liked this car since i first started at Gelders and the T5 is one hell of dream for getting quick easy power from ill have it running 280-300bhp in a few weeks! hehee
Any way.........UPDATE -
Todays been a busy day for me, in my dinner i removed a gearbox from one of our scrap 850 T5's for mine (gearbox was damaged by con-rod hitting starter), and found that it had a new clutch so ive had that too!!
I then stopped behind after work and removed the fluid flywheel from the new engine because it came from an auto box!
Ive decided that this weekend im going to drop the engine and box on the subframe and fit the new box and engine but it has to be done and dusted by Sunday night as we need the ramps at work so its going to be a hard long and buys weekend for me
Ill be putting the 850 on a ramp as soon as im done at 12 o'clock tomorrow and then from then on its just me, some Monster drink, abit of music and my new car for the weekend
it should all be worth it though because once the weekend is over the car "should" be running and ready for its MOT and tax!
Im away from next Sunday for the week so when i get back all being well it'll be insured and on the road!
Im more than happy with the insurance though!, for me (21) to insure a 2.3 litre 20v turbo with NO no claims bonus its going to come to around 1400 quid
ill be turning the boost back down to 9.6psi (225bhp) for a few days to make sure the new engine etc is happy then ill raize the boost back upto 13psi as Noble's set it up and run it like that for a few weeks until i can send of the ECU for the stage one chip
thanks

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
ouch 1400 lol oh the difference a few years makes lol, got a quote earlier for a lexus LS400 4.0 V8 auto and the said FC would be 1200 a year with no no claims lol
i would offer to come up and help but 1 i dont know how to get to your work and 2 i dont know how much help i would be with only one working arm lol

Insurance is cheap considering the size of the engine you got a good deal hope it goes well and don't forget the Modifiedmonsters stickers just to finish her off nicely

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
Update............
S##T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had a hard day today guys and girls, things havnt gone massively well but i dnt mind saying that ive done mega well today!! proud of myslef!!
Managed to drag the car onto a ramp and stripped the bay down, after a couple of hours the subframe was sitting on the floor with the engine, box, power steering rack and ARB sat on it! which was good going on one of these!
But sadly an over enthusiastic mate came along at the last min to help and managed to break the power steering rack
Then to make things even worse it turns out the poor turbo is totally buggered!!!, the thrust bearing has gone badly and i wasnt going to build it all back up on a knackered turbo
I had no choice but to drop and entire engine/subframe etc of a scrap T5 we had in the yard, but i had to do this on the floor with little usable support aids so i struggled along for ages and before i new it id dropped the engine and subframe and i removed the turbo and rack from the scrapper.
The S##T part about this is the car ive taken the turbo from did a whopping 250.000 miles without ever having a turbo recon or change so sadly i wont be winding up the boost and chipping the bugger on a sky high mileage turbo
Im going to have to get the old knackered unit reconed before i start tuning it......
Amazing this was the guy that owned the 250k T5 was an old guy who will never have thrashed the car so the turbo has no play at all in the thrust bearing and very very little play in the bearings at all !!!
A 250,000 mile turbo in great condition!!! crazy.....
So tomorrow ill be swapping the new engine which is now fitted with the new turbo to the new box and fitting them on the subframe along with the new rack and fit it all back best a poss to get it of the ramp ready for jobs booked in on Monday
IM VERY TIRED AND ACHY
thanks
Jason

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
thats the way ot goes with cars sometimes eh doesnt make it any less exhausting and painful!
If the new turbo is in good nick then I dont see why you cant whack the boost up on it? If its been pootled about all its life then it will have worked less than a hard-worked 40k miler!
Only thing I can think of with your turbo is that the oil could be coked up in it from never being worked hard enough, but that would lead to bearing wear, of which you say there is none, therefore its in good shape for thrashing IMO

Re: My Volvo 850 T5 !
Hello everyone update time
firstly - munkul
thanks for the comments, ive been thinking about it today and i tend to agree with you i will be running 13psi of boost as before to make 245bhp and ill monitor the turbo over time, i think the reason why the old turbo was so poorly may have been down to pure oil starvation as im about to go into
Okay...today -
been a progressive day today with ups and downs as always.
Came to remove the flywheel from the old buggered engine only to find that it was baked and damaged through serious hard use so it was back under a scrapper for another good flywheel.
Then it had to swap the sumps from the old engine to the new one because someone had decided that with it being heavy it was easier to drag it on the floor rather than lift it
Only when i removed the old sump i found that it was full of the rubbish and metal shavings from a self destructing engine without oil !!
It took me an hour to clean out the sump thanks to a stupidly complex design that stops oil moving around and leaving the strainer but in the end it was clean enough to refit to the new engine
Then the third issue came along drive shaft was seized into the old box and i needed to get it out, it was that bad it led me to have to strip down the gearbox and brutally destroy the diff to get out the old shaft...tut
BUT...in the end ive done well and the new box, clutch, starter, engine and subframe are all back in the car bolted up and secure heheeee
tomorrow i need to reconnect a few pipes and connectors and then i should be able to listen to the 5 cylinder purring away
lots of pics to pop up soon!!
thanks
