My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
So after owning my 9 for almost 18months i decided to take it to a local tuning specialists and have a few power runs carried out. Was never expecting a great deal tbf circa 180bhp, and i'm not a big believer of dyno readouts, its more to do with how they drive on the road than the "pub talk" power figure, BUT i had spare cash and a spare Saturday morning.
Car is a '99 Civic Type R EK9
92,000 Miles
B16B
SPOON ECU
Mugen Replica CAI
Mugen 4-1 Manifold
Hollow Standard Cat
Fujitsubo LegalisR Stainless exhaust system
Running on Shell Vpower 99 Ron fuel
After a few warm up runs and getting the car up to temperature, checking to see if the sensors were giving true figures he decided it was ready for a power run.
The 1st attempt resulted in a left wheel roll out so the run was aborted, he then altered and reduced tyre pressures hopefully eliminating wheel spin on the rollers.
He then began again, the car sounded healthy and no signs of running issues could be heard.
The 1st run yielded a power figure of 190.6 bhp, the next run gave a figure of 191bhp and 121.8lbf.ft , 10 bhp more than i expected. ) ) )
A further run was done with the airfuel probe up the exhaust, i was told a slight drop in power would be expected do to the restriction. He was once again correct with a readout of 188.4 BHP
Overall he was very impressed with all the figures, AFR was about what he expected, just slightly above what he thought at VTEC engagement point, but nether the less still well within limits.
A few pics and printouts
Printouts
SPOON ECU @ 191 BHP and 121.8 lbf.ft ( WHEEL FIGURE 152.9)
SPOON ECU AFR
Comments welcome, but all in all, I think this is quite a nice figure running a spoon ECU  Coupled with the mfactory 3rd 4th and 5th gears its definately "Nippy"
Thanks
Ash

Now the extra bit that i didnt include, after doing the 3 runs on the SPOON ecu i decided to run the standard one and see what the difference is. The SPOON boasts higher peak hp and increased midrange hp and torque, plus the £720 price tag for the ECU
The standard Honda ECU made 190.6 bhp, yeh 0.4hp peak figure difference!! Gutted was the word, so the SPOON is now sold and a nice custom remap is on the way
GRAPH FOR STANDARD ECU
STANDARD vs SPOON
The tuner said out of the two he would run the SPOON due to the lower VTEC point and smoother power curve, BUT £425 for the ecu would outweigh any gains seen on the RR graphs so it got sold. Plus the standard map has the aggressive VTEC kick unlike the modern VTEC engines.
Just shows that mods we do to our cars can sometimes only be psycological gains. Custom is the future!

Re: My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
thats a surprise you would think a big honda tunner like Spoon would have some good upgrades
Re: My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
Yeh I expected a bigger difference from the spoon, didn't expect massive gains but there wasn't much of an increase across the range. Hopefully a map will free up a few extra horses, will probably struggle getting to 200bhp without a bigger TB or inlet or cams.
Re: My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
is it not because the spoon ecu is mapped for tings like more aggresive vtec killer cam's or different inlet set-up??? an old friend of mine bought a spoon ecu for his k20 type-r and saw an increase of 15bhp, plus dont the spoon ecu's allow the engine to rev higher, i might be wrong but it dont really matter as its sold anyway lol
nice car and welcome to the forum mate, always had a soft spot for honda's ~weeps as he misses his lude~

Re: My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
Yeh the graph doesn't show the spoon hit the limited as he stopped accelerating once it started dipping off on the power curve.
As for the mods there only mapped for bolt on items, only difference being they'd be mapped for SPOON products and not mugen and other parts. HONDA spent millions developing the b16b engine and getting power from it, so there aren't massive gains to be made with a plug and play ECU especially on a 1.6.

lovely car mate, and awesome power from a near standard 1.6! Strange about the ECU thing, I always thought Spoon were the dogs b0lloks for honda.
You can get a variable vtec engagement adjuster thing from Apex'i cant you?

damn thats a nice motor, and impressive power, shame about the torque but that not the way theyre built to drive is it, they ask to be up the rev range
good stuff though i likes

Re: My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
I'll change my sig... oooooppppsss
It loves getting thrashed all day at Cadwell, Donnington etc, then it starts up first time, and idles at 850rpm and can cruise nicely home without an issue.
Yeh HONDA dont understand torque, except the new touring cars which are easily the fastest at the moment.

Re: My EK9 on the Dyno *RESULTS INSIDE*
i like the extremes though, i had a 2.0 16v ibiza and you had to thrash it to get a good drive out of it ok its not as extreme as the honda vtecs but ive driven a 2.2 prelude a long timne ago and although it was an auto it didnt half start to shift once up the revs, but i also like the opposite end of the scale ive also owned a bora tdi and now regularly use our lasses polo tdi which are just torquey mofos and theyre enjoyable to just be able to sit at any speed any revs and they just pick up and eff off but they can sorta run out of puff really in comparison
