that turbo is massive i bet there aint going be owt left of the Cinq when you put your foot down!
haha, its been a right job to make it fit, and the good news is the GT turbo cooler pipes upto the new turbo really well, the bends are far less harsh and the air now flows into the bottom and out of the top instead off into the top and out off the bottom and then back upto the top haha, so that should help flow and spool up time as well as helping push a few top end horses out.

I would get rid of the divisions if I were you The ones in the old manifold have deteriorated with heat which is why the new one looks chunky
There have been many examples of these dividers coming adrift and wrecking turbos so it is better to be safe than sorry

Re: Choosing the right turbo for me in my stage three project
me too haha! Today i havnt got much done im affraid but every little helps! ive ground a small amount of the block crankcase away to allow the actuator to seat without touching the engine haha, and ive also piped up the oil return from the turbo, mounted the rad further forwards, and sorted a mounting method out for the intercooler.
Hopefully starting it up in the morning to make sure its ok then its got to go next door for the exhaust to be refabricated to fit the system......then i have to drive off boost for a few weeks! TUT

Please tell me you haven't used your favourite method and used cable ties

erm............maybe, what i say is it'll do for now untill forver haha.
I have a metal bracket that juust wants welding so ill pop it on as soon as its done, i have already made a bracket for the intercooler too....no more cable ties on that anymore haha.

i wont hear a bad word against cable ties please, they are in actual fact "legendary"
how many times have you been stuck up sh*t creek and a cable tie has saved the day haha

THE BEST LIVES AGAIN!!
After some hard work and late nights in works freezing cold and damp lock up the cinq lives again! i finished all the major stuff off today and has the car running, the exhaust note has changed slightly due to the larger turbine housing which is a plus
I checked that oil was going through the turbo after priming it and everything seems perfect, it spins up fast when reving off load, seems to respond quicker the thierd T15 did, also the rad sits in its origonal bracket now without any problems too
here are the latest pics -

Re: Choosing the right turbo for me in my stage three project
Im looking forwards to it too, it'll be intersting to see how the bigger turbo will help with poer delivery, i already now that thanks to a very efficient turbine wheel and housing it can spin fast with minamal lag but chances are it will come in proggresively instad of just saying bang here you go full boost in 1 second.........snap bang smash,,driveshaft etc etc haha
seems to spin up very fast when blipping the throttle from idle ( i did take a video but its bad quality)
thanks

Good and Bad news today im affaid
yesterday me, ryan ( CIT C2 VTS) and Matt (FIHYGT) went to pick the cinq up from work so i have a car again, it started fine and i ran it upto temp to bleed the coolant.
Then im affraid it good and bad new
Good new first -
The car drives loads better off boost with the new bigger turbo, and boy is the GT17 lively, i can feel it trying to come onto boost at the slightest throttle push and its got itself home up some big hills in fourth and fift at no more than 1psi boost.
BAD NEWS -
Its smoking like right banger!! there is oil getting into the turbine housing from the seal, it shouldnt be getting in but there are a few reasons why it might be happening
1. my exhaust system might no be creating enough back pressure to hold the seal in its seat. (although there wasnt a problem before and its the same centre housing!!
2. There is oil in the exhaust thats burning off slowly.
3.There good be an issue with the oil return being a little to low although again its the same centre housing at roughly the same high from the return on the sump.
4. The turbo is mounted at a slight angle ( slightly tilted forwards) but then a car shouldnt smoke when parked on a hill.
And my biggest fear is its the turbo itself which may need to go back too midlands if its faulty. Bloody car!!
Its also pi##ing oil out of the turbo oil drain seal which should be an easy fix but one id rather not be messing with.
let you all no how i go on tomorow as i need to sort it to use the car monday.

Re: Choosing the right turbo for me in my stage three project
is it smoking like an absolute bugger, or is it just on idle, or what?

munkul wrote:is it smoking like an absolute bugger, or is it just on idle, or what?
its mainly on idle, but its still smoking while driving fairly bad.
Thought it may be a back pressure issue so i stood with my foot over the exhaust to build up some pressure but it didnt work, plus its the same centre housing as before so this shouldnt be an issue daaaaam
Oil is leaking from the turbine housing itself while i stand under neath and watch but i got it home a few moments ago after a smokey journey and let it run for 2 mins and there was no smoke!
Checked the oil return - thats perfect
Checked back pressure with foot - that didnt make a difference
Checked engine beathers to make sure it wasnt the engine smoking (has done this a few times in past)
But all to no avail, plus points off today are - fitted an airfilter (couldnt get one to fit before) in a nice place to gain full cool air, its not practical but on the dry days its perfect . Also sorted the main oil leak from the return out (god bless silicone) and chopped the oil return pipe down to make it a steaper angel into the sump for better drainage and resistance to oil surge.
(thanks to ryan btw for the help today)

top man brezomus maxamus!
BTW the airfilter sounds nice, i let it come onto boost (about 0.4bar) to see what the fueling was like, it was rich and the air filter sounds nice too,,,,,,cool

do you have a wideband O2 sensor? reason i ask is cos i couldnt see anything in your spec list bar "afr gauge"

Re: Choosing the right turbo for me in my stage three project
No mate no wideband, one on the way soon. i dont reli on the A/F gauge i have now its not acurate, just nice to see it in the rich anyway.
Only thing i have on my side till it gets to a rolling road is the mega low c/r and the 97ron fuel, it can run 0.4bar on the rolling road lean while staying clear off det, they actaly set the car up last time so the MF2 came in at 0.3 bar rather than 0psi so even with the mild increase in air flow at the same pressure this turbo gives im ok, however im running it around at 1psi till rolling road time lol.

Re: Choosing the right turbo for me in my stage three project
fair enough. "rich" on a narrowband can be well lean on a turbo setup though.
for the £160 that a wideband costs its easily justifiable once you use it for tweaks of your own.

Re: Choosing the right turbo for me in my stage three project
Ive found an LC1 Wideband for £145 so when i get the exhaust sorted (later in week or next week) ill be fitting another lambda boss and an EGT boss, because for me keeping an eye on the EGT's is just as important too.....and i like gauges a fair bit two hehe
thanks
