My new clutch
I have had a CGM 180mm ceramic-metallic 3 paddle clutch in my car for ages, it handles the power well but was horrible in traffic for ages until it settled down - i think its almost worn out, tbh. It still doesnt slip at all when driving hard in any gear, but slipped once a few weeks during a hard launch in the dry.
This is the old clutch before it went in:
Sooo... i was going to find a 1.4 200mm flywheel and fast road stilo clutch to replace it, but finding a flywheel was proving hard, so got back onto the blower to CGM, who informed me there was a new 5 paddle design out and they could give me a proper 190mm version (unlike the BS 180mm one i have which was supposedly a 190mm clutch, honest)
190 sheets and it arrived at my door
Looks cool, dunno what it will be like when fitted. Due to past experience, it will be fine and probably slip a little during the first week or two, then it will stiffen right up.
EDIT: just looking at it, its first time ive realised its a 6 paddle not 5, although i was told it was 5, lol

Re: My new clutch
not bad, that surprisingly doesnt sound too expensive for an uprated clutch either

Re: My new clutch
well the clutch went in 2 weeks ago, slipped like crazy at first. ive done about 100 miles on it now, it still slips a little from cold but its fine once it warms up. "bed-in time of 500 miles" supposed to be driving really gently as well lol, well we'll see. Safe to say, its been getting death for a good few of those 80 miles already....

Is it a common thing with these clutches to slip during running in periods then? never heard off it before. And i no how hard it is to "drive careful for x amount off miles" it can be the hardest thing possible when things are going well and some random vectra driver sits on the bumper haha.

i dont know. I didnt have much torque back when i bedded in the 3-paddle, so it never slipped anyways.
clutch theory would tell you though, that bearing in mind same clamping force, same friction coefficient, twice the surface area and only 10mm larger diameter, the 6 paddle wont handle as much power as the 3 paddle one.
the only things in favour of the 6 paddle are: more heat capacity so will last longer and take more abuse; smoother to use, and hopefully take enough power once it's bedded in.
aaaahh i see, waking up old memory's from collage here when we did clutches, its interesting how they all vary too....a mate off mine runs a nissan micra 1300 turbo and he has just fitted a 4 paddle clutch after nitrous gave him 175bhp/torque and he hasnt seen any slip as yet,he is also impressed by how light the peddle is as opposed to what he thought it was going to like.
