DIESEL TECH common-rail direct fuel injection systems
Common-rail Direct Fuel Injection systems
a simple look into this system.
Modern Diesel engines have moved on massivley since the old indirect injection noisey, slow engines of the past, modern diesels are smooth and quiet and pass very strict emission regulations while giving extremely good power figures and immence torque! one of the main ways they achieve this is the fueling setup they now use -
Piezo injectors which are now used in most modern diesel engines, they are electronicaly controlled and have as many as 8 mega fine pin holes in which fuel is sprayed through as an atomised fine mist, meaning a much better burn is achieved. The injectors can be fired as many times as 8 times during one power stroke to give a smoother quieter and better burn of ther fuel.
Direct injection. This means that now days the piezo injector is placed directly inside the cylinder combustion chamber, this means the fuel can be sprayed straight onto/into a specially designed chamber causing the fuel and air to swirl (swirling effects give a more efficient burn).
Common-rail. The common rail is a simple fuel rail that is attached to all of the injectors feeding them with mega high pressures between 1500 and 2000bar! this is a key in giving a mega fine mist of fuel to burn more efficiently.
This fuel system is controlled by the ecu allowing full control over timming, pressure, quantity and this inturn means a far better engine than old type cars.
