New turbo !!
Finally pulled my finger out and decided to sort out my leaky well worn 260,000 mile TD04 15G turbo !!
I have ordered a brand new TDO4 HL 16T turbo as fitted to the stock Volvo 850R and the later V70 T5's etc, it has a larger compressor side but will maintain full drivability to keep that fantastic torque curve these engines are known for
As soon as i can get a good price on a re-map ill bang the new turbo on and take it for its map!, ill be going for a map running 16psi so it will be safe and reliable on the stock rods etc although you can get away with more boost tailoring the map to bring the boost in gently until higher rpm thus saving the rods......
Meanwhile i have to track down and identify a boost leak i seem to have developed, the boost has dropped from 12.5psi to around 10.5-11psi dropping rapidly down to 7-8psi after 5000rpm !! still goes like a rocket but its not good.
Although i have a feeling the boost leak good be turbo related anyway, either the recirc valve the actuator..
ill post some pics when the turbo arrives this week

Re: New turbo !!
Thanks for the comments
The turbo that ive gone for was a sensible thought out choice, i good have gone for a larger 18T or even the 19T and guaranteed myself 320-340 bhp but i am thinking about the clutch, con rods and the high mileage box on the car as well as general reliability.
The 16T flow fractionally more air than the 15G and is known for holding better boost throughout the whole rev range of the T5 engine to give better overall power. The improvements are centred around the compressor side. It uses a lighter compressor wheel for better spool up and a newer more efficient "T" style wheel over the older "G" style wheel......
Its was fitted ot the 850 R to give 250bhp @ 10.5 psi (10bhp more than the 15G powered T5-R @ the same boost).
Should be one soon along with some nice silicone boost pipes to keep the boost where it should be.....in the pipes!!!
thanks

Re: New turbo !!
nice.
Its dead tempting to go for bigger thinking that it gives you potential for the future, but its fair play when you know exactly what you want for the car now and in the future. I only wish I was that decisive!

choosing to go for the 16T was partly down to being a wuss in the engine department for once haha its unfortunate but the stock 850 T5 rods are prone to bending from running to much boost low down or to much torque (limit is said to be 340lb/sf with an aggressive boost map and maybe 360-370 with a more progressive map) there are ways around it such as custom maps for a more progressive boost curve until the revs climb etc but yes i have indeed thought sensible for once haha.
Ill be dead chuffed with 270-300bhp mainly thanks to the torque being so good one these and ill have always have a little more to get out of it in the future should i want to
thanks
