project FTO buggy
ok well i am putting the prelude on the back burner as i am about to start building my dads new toy which i have been looking forward to for a long time lol
what we are going to do is build a Class9 autograss buggy which is basically we can do what we want as long as its a car engine and between 1472cc and 2070cc N/A (no jay NOS is banned lol), now most who race in this class use a buggy built with a vauxhall redtop in which is good but only 150bhp stock, they then set about tuning and get them upto around 200bhp, thats 200bhp in a buggy that with the driver ways around 400kgs, 0-62mph on dirt is around 3.5secs lol from a good well sorted machine
now as thous of you who know me, i like to be different so i started looking around for engines in that catagory that would be very powerful but also cheap as blown engines are common, while i was looking i also got to thinking about transmission too and thought that a triptronic set-up might be better than a manual, as a result of both of these factors i have decided the engine and trans we are going to use will be the 2.0 V6 semi auto with triptronic from an FTO (until now its never been done in autograss as far as we have found) which comes out of the crate 180bhp for the GR or 200bhp for the GPX which puts us on even power with the redtops and gives us a little more weight over the rear wheels for traction
what we intend on doing to start with is just run with a stock GR motor and while my dad learns to drift on dirt i am going to try and lay my grubby little mits on a good GPX (or GP version-R 230bhp) and then set about tuning it with the aim of 300bhp N/A, the plan is ITB's with standalone maybe megasquirt if it will do a V6 if not i will talk my dad into omex 710 lol
i am picking the donor FTO up tomorrow and a half built tub is arriving at the weekend which has all the front cockpit built but the back where the engine goes needs doing which is perfect for us as we are doing it different, now before anyone says there might be a reason why everyone uses redtops, we have spoken to 4 owner/drivers about this idea and they all said "we never even gave it a thought, i will be looking out for it"
so i will be putting all of my spare time into building this now as we need it ready for the start of next season which is in 11 months lol i will post pics as i go lol starting tomorrow with the donor car before i set at it with the socket set lol

Re: project FTO buggy
sounds fun, i would have said the main reason for using redtops is theyre so common and people know what exact gains to expect as its been covered a million times,
id go a little different given the limits and go for something like a 1.8 from a civic vti-s again because i reckon there more of those about than ftos with a 2.0 v6,
interesting stuff either way

Re: project FTO buggy
not surprised they use the redtop its the daddy.... bullet proof and the best bhp per pound ratio around
all sounds good mate good luck with it all keep us updated....
3.5 seconds on dirt is mad my dads mates 185bhp megabusa westfield can only just do that weighting in at 350kgs on the road with semi slicks........

these things run proper dirt tires and the ones that hit 60 in 3.5 ar running 2 tuned busa engines or similar
ricky we did look at the 1.8 teg lump but the problem is they are expensive to get a hold of compared to the 2.0 V6 fto, the one we just bought set us back £325 for the full car and it has lots of toys we can take off and sell like a full de-cat SS system made by powerflow, panels and lights and wheels extra lol so hopefully we may make our money back lol
my dad getting over heavy with the throttle, and yes we had let the engine warm up first but in all honesty i wasn't happy with him for holding it on the limiter

Re: project FTO buggy
right not much progress, well it depends how you look at it lol, the buggy is no closer to being ready but we now have a mountain of spares as over the last week and a half i have stripped not 1 but 2 FTO's, we were only going to buy one and then get a second one at a later date and do an insane engine on ITB's lol but as it happens we had a slight problem when messing about and ragging the first car up and down the drive, we managed to burst the torque converter which resulted in no drive
so we decided to give mistsubishi a call and see how much a new one would be, errrrmmmmmm 45mins later i told them to get f**ked lol, £741.98 as they are a special order from japan as they dont fail, well clearly they do lol, all this resulted in us looking for a second hand gearbox and even they are fetching around £300, i then stumbled across FTO number 2, which has a failed water pump for the bargin price of £225, which came fitted with the yoko Adavn SA3R's and a HKS super Drager cat back, hmmmmm free car as we have just sold the yoko's for £225 lol bargin me thinks lol
so now our garage has the remains of 2 FTO's, a class 9 frame and for the last 9 days me lol, i'm in car heaven lol, as i right this i am sat in an FTO sports seat and using a V6 as a table lol

Looks like it's coming on nicely it's a shame about the torque converter good job there was another one for sale at a reasonable price id love to be able to do a project like this

Re: project FTO buggy
its defo alot of fun and something that will be amazing when done but i can see its going to involve alot of late nights and grazed fingures, time to take out shares in elastiplast lol
well all going to plan i should be getting my hands on a bender and some pipe this week so then it will be time to fire up the welder

looks like a great fun project!
Out of interest, how come you arent using a manual box?

Re: project FTO buggy
to be honest i wanted to be different lol that and the fact that if you go for manual you can only use 2 gears due to linkages and wires, so far all the buggies i have been and looked at have a similar set up where they have sent the gear box (f20 for the redtops) away and reworked so that 2nd and 3rd are where 3rd and 4th would be plus they lose the use of reverse, because we are using the semi-auto box we can race in manual which gives us the use of all gears but yes as you may have guessed we may be a bit slow off the line but all the testing in the car before i pulled the engine showed that from a standing start and just planting the throttle in gear there is enough torque off the V6 to allow it to spin the wheels up and get a great start
then to top it off the manuals are getting very rare and are now climbing in price where as the auto's are still dropping

Re: project FTO buggy
hmm. shame really.
Out of interest, how complicated is the manual cable setuo? When I looked into doing this with a coupe 20vt it looked like a relatively simple job - extend cables, run them the other way, and make a custom shifter with the cable mounts above the pivot.
guessing the FTO is a bit more awkward....

Re: project FTO buggy
its not so much the case of just extend cables its where to fit a manual shifter as the frame is tight as it is and even with the auto shifter htere isn't much room, but the main reason why i am going down the semi-auto route is just because its not been tried in a class 9 with a limit of 2047cc and so far all the of the regulars at the nottingham track are talking about it and nobody has said its going to fail, they all just say they never thought of it cos every one follows the beaten track and goes redtop which personally i am not a fan of, if we do it and its doesn't work i will just convert it to manual, plus going down the auto route works out cheaper to start with which means more pennies for standalone and maybe ITB's lol, we aren't building this to be class winners, its just abit of fun and see if we can start to get people thinking out side the box lol, there are 8 locals to us and all of them run redtops, the rules state any engine between 1472-2070cc and forced induction is banned in class 9, the redtop is 150bhp stock, i have found loads of engines in this cc size that have more power, honda B16, B18, K20, mitubishi fto V6, colt 1.6 and 1.8, etc etc but mainly jap stuff which you can then set about tuning them up and get stupid power but all we need to do is be able to better 200bhp as the redtops are capped at that by reliablity, so once i had decided on the FTO V6 i looked at the pro's and con's of man over auto and to be honest the swing for me was the auto box is a little heavier which will give better traction and my dad is less likely to miss a shift and over rev it and blow the engine sky high as i will be fully re-building the second engine and seeing how high we can get it to rev and what power i can squeeze out of it

Re: project FTO buggy
right its been a while since i started this but i have finally pulled my fingure out of my arse and done something to this lol, i have managed to get the engine in to place in the frame my dad has made, all be it i have had to cut a bit out where he got his measurements wrong but apart from that the engine and box are now sat in place ready for me to wire in this weekend and hopefully have it fired up by sun evening

Re: project FTO buggy
right got an up-date here as i have been away and helped my dad sort a few things out.
ok so it now has a full set of wheels and the engine is in place and running, all the panels are done and the cooling system is fitted and filled. its 90% complete and should hopefully everything going to plan it might be racing this weekend, right got a small update as to what we have done different to all the other cars in the field.
step one, we used a 2.0 v6 24v for engine in the hope of finding low down torque instead of high rev'ving wheel spinning power, we also decided to go for the semi-auto against alot of other peoples advice lol
stp two, we decided to go for duel wishbone inderpendant rear suspension instead of the normal trailing arm with arb, hopefully this should give us a better balanced car, we have also gone for slightly shorter front shocks but angled them a little so they dont work as hard.
because we have gone for the auto set-up it also means we can bias the brakes forward and make use of left foot braking into the corners, this should hopefully help enter into a drift before the corner and get the car balanced before the corner nd give a faster more controlable drift, yes these things are basically off road drift monsters lol.
i will get some pics up abit later of what it now looks like.

Re: project FTO buggy
oh these are videos of what we did to the old buggy as the engine was about dead and we were only going to rob it for bits lol
my dad driving in the first and i am driving in the other 2, i'd like to point out the first vid is my first attempt driving it and what fun lol
and here is the first fire up of the new engine
since this vid i have tidied up the wiring and also sorted the air leaks causing the high idle, brake servo take off lol, also the exhaust should be going on in the next couple of days, motor bike silencer to comply with noise regs lol

Re: project FTO buggy
right just another little update, my dad has just rang to say that he has done the drive shafts and filled the gearbag with oil and set it off down the drive to see what it goes like, his direct words "f*#k me its fast, it eats the old buggy alive and it scared the s*#t out of me" rough translation means i think its faster than we thought lol

Re: project FTO buggy
right forgot to post, it had its first outing last week and in its first ever race in anger it got a second in very wet conditions, then my dad feeling very pleased with himself wet to fire it up for race 2 and nothing, totally dead. we suspected a dead fuse due to wet conditions but upon closer inspection and tracing power we found the regulation cut off switch on the bonnet has fail. oh well thats why this season is a shakedown season lol
