Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
the problem with the punto is that its still a hatchback, which is fine if you are into em, but it can never hope to compete with a proper sports car for the way it drives.
Ironically, the punto is vastly more practical and has WAY more room than the SX... Never thought id say that about it lol

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
when it came to engine mods i put custom turbo conversion, clutch + exhaust changes. No point going into details when the above covers everything

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
Fair play if you do. Dunno why you'd want to though, considering with not to much difficulty you could put a 2.0 turbo lump in for less cost and way more awesomeness. Heck, even a GT transplant with seb 2 would be better powers for cheaper. Both transplants are straight forward and a few people have done them.
Obviously if you do go down the sporting turbo route i will help you with anything you want to know, but i still think its a good idea, but not the best idea.

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
the thing is its because my friends jube is doing a sei 1.2 8v turbo and we have decided that we want to do track days together and a 1.2 16v turbo punto running around 150bhp is about the same performance wise as a 1.2 8v turo sei with around 120bhp
besides i want this car to be about handling on a track and a 16vt or a GT lump just weights too much compared to the little 1.2 16v motor thus lees weight infront of the front wheels meaning better handling lol the turbo will only be there for a few extra ponies down the straights lol its pointless being quick through the corners if you have nothing when you on the straights lol
my first question though to get started is what size compression plate you running and is it the same as an 8v one???

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
its slightly different to the 8v. Mike Tanski at Ferriday has the 16v pattern on file though. I'm using a 1.2mm plate and standard HG to get a CR of approximately 9.1:1.
Yes thats still quite high, but consider the extra breathing ability of the 16v head as standard, and use a decent turbo at moderate boost, mapped properly with super unleaded, and its as safe as lower CRs.
In this modern day a lot of big power engine builders are building higher CR engines now, with better breathing and tuning, it allows for better response off-boost.
Mind you, at over 1 bar on my turbo i'd want better exhaust flow (EWG for example) and water/meth injection to feel comfortable. That or a thicker plate.

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
well as its going to be a track car i am thinking of EWG and screamer pipe anyway and i'm eyeing up a gt17 series turbo, but as for the CR i'm abit stuck cos i was going to aim for around 8.5:1 but if your having good results at 9.1:1 that would make it better for road use right?? but there again its going to get thrashed on a track lol so need it to be reliable too

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
lol good luck with getting on track with a screamer pipe! lots of places are very strict now with their drive-by limits...
go 1.5mm thick if you're worried. Just remember a proper composite HG, not the thin MLS ones.

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
well with the mk2 there was no need as the 1.8 16v 130bhp (iirc) fitted in and was alot more reliable and fuel efficent but had just as much poke, with modern engines they have realised that fitting a turbo and setting the engine up right can give good figures but still keep decent MPG, take the multiair fiat engine as that is like 880cc 2cylider turbo engine producing 88bhp and the lowest CO2 of any car on the road bar electic lol

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo
aye but as they pointed out on top gear it wasnt exactly great on fuel, which sorta defies the point of it being low co2 etc in my eyes,
as for munkul's motor i think hes done the best option with it by chucking a turbo on along with plenty of other bits, and if anyone misses the cooler and doesnt realise then they're in for a shock
