My s14
Well i won this on ebay the other day on a complete whim. I knew i wanted an sr20det s-body or an rx-7 FC turbo, but for ages i have only looked at "nice" ones - eg PS13's running lightly tuned sr20dets, kitted, sorted chassis, etc, were still going for around £5k, and FCs running similar mods but with extra rust, were still going for £3k (obviously not as good an option as nissan)
I then had a revelation, because i knew if i got a "nice" car i wouldnt want to push it too hard in case of smashing it. So i saw this, with a few small niggles, it looked clean, it had a gamble of a well sorted engine, and it was cheap!
So it was delivered this morning from the south coast by Dixon's Services - doing an all night run for me  and it is MUCH cleaner than expected - no rust whatsover on any panels, and the underside looks good as well! So it is a keeper. I will continue to run the punto every day, and keep this off the road and do stuff to it.
CAR SPECIFICATIONS:
- Model : Nissan 200sx s14
- Engine size :1998 16v SR20DET
- Mileage: 78,000
- Year : 1996
- Colour : Metallic purple
ENGINE MODIFICATIONS :
(not sure here what is definite - "apparently" Full build, 2.1, forged pistons, strengthened lightened balanced con rods, flat planned race crank, new bearings throughout, lightened and balanced flywheel, ap paddle clutch, ported polished and gas flowed cylinder head, bronze valve guides, nismo steel head gasket, nismo tc gasket kit throughout, garrett gt roller bearing turbo, s/steel exhaust, induction kit, new tappets, new timing chain. But not many receipts to prove it all!)
What i know so far:
- Wiseco forged pistons
- Garrett GT28R turbo
- Full stainless exhaust
- AP Racing Paddle clutch
- Cone filter
- New timing chain
STYLING MODIFICATIONS:
- None
INTERIOR:
- None (standard leather is imacculate though!)
CHASSIS:
- Standard suspension
- Possible LSD or maybe just a well working viscous diff
- Lenso multispoke pimptastic wheels
- grooved discs all round
ICE:
- Sony HU with 6 CD changer in boot
- Infinity components all round
FUTURE MODS:
- Coilovers
- guages - boost, oil temp, oil pressure, maybe more
- adjustable suspension links
- new bushes throughout engine, transmission and suspension
- welded or plated LSD depending on what it has already
- FMIC
- Find out the real spec of engine and fuel system, and mod to between 350-400bhp
- S14a/S15 front end conversion, tasteful bodykit
- Who knows? I could go crazy with it, do to competition spec, or keep as a fast road car. Not sure which route to go down!
Anyways, thats it.

do you not think this version is trying a little too hard to be like the r33 skyline (and failing miserably) but i can forgive it being a ba***rd child of the skyline cos look at that super sexy engine bay

cheers yeah it slides so easily you cant imagine, just been hooning it around the farm in tight spaces and it is so controllable! Not looking forward to driving it in the wet lol
Mario - yeah it does look a bit r33. Both are dated and bland IMO.

Re: My s14
looks a nice clean motor, wheels go well with it. Engine looks very standard so good base to start tuning, as it looks like everything is very standard (even has standard boost restrictor pipe in) first thing to check and if still nissan then change is the fuel pump. But sounds like he's given engine a mini rebuild. Ask him where he got it done and if he changed bottom and big end bearings if you can.
Would love to see it in flesh.

Also as tuning power goes it all depends on what your willing to spend, with spec you already have you can get 320bhp for less than a grand, 350 will set you back about £1500 and 400bhp about another 3 grand on top of that again.

That looks sweet, I love those. Its one of my "Cars I wish I owned", not dream super cars but realistic ones, along with the older R32/33 Skyline (dont think I could afford an R34 in my position), or the clast Escort RS Turbo.
The S14 would look sweet with a big spoiler though.

Re: My s14
cheers lads
no BGWs getting fitted to this (Big Man Toucher Wing) lol
The engine had a full overhaul with new bearings throughout. Im not sure exactly why but it has oversize pistons so im thinking original piston failure/scored block. That, the paddle clutch and the gt28r are the only mods though - no boost control or ecu chip, so unlikely to be above 250bhp. Feels faster than most 250bhp cars which is what fooled me into thinking it was.
But i think the turbo is on its way out with end float in the shaft - so im thinking of skipping stages 1-3 etc and going for a custom holset HX30 top-mount setup, 555cc injectors, Nistune board etc etc, and about 350bhp.
Or, just get HD 1a chip, boost controller, fuel pump, fit the FMIC and keep it that way til the turbo gives up... choices lol
I want coilovers, suspension arms and bushes, etc, new wheels, s14a front (cheaper than s15 parts!) etc etc etc so this will be a long drawn out project while i find money to pay for it all lol

Re: My s14
I would still get the fuel pump as my first purchase. Also if going for about 350bhp you'd be wise to skip straight pass the 555 injectors as even with increased pressure at the fuel rail they would still be maxing out the duty cycle at that power figure. tbh I don't think you'd even get 350bhp with 555's, as for turbo's i'd stick with bottom mount unless your wanting 400+bhp as then you'll need a lot less custom parts and exhausts etc so costs would be a lot less. Front mount and jez 1a chip would get you circa 280bhp. The RR that Jez (horsham developments) uses seams to be very conservative. I would certainley stick at that for the time being, only things you'll need are
Front mount £350
Fuel Pump £65
Boost controller - manual bren/dawes device will suffice £15
Tubular manifold £120
Elbow £65
and straight through exhaust £300ish
you may even have some of these already and can certainley get most second hand. I have a trust Turbo elbow you could have for very cheap will just need a crack welding.
Also if you need a hand fitting any of it give me a shout i'm a dab hand at it all now. although its a long way from cumbria lol
Whatever you do good luck with it, these cars are superb fun and a real joy to drive.
oh yeah I did the 14a convertion on mine

Re: My s14
I hear the names ED at fusion and Horsham crop up alot in the Nissan tuning circle, a friend off mine had then map a 320bhp almera GTI with he SR20 lump in there, and theyve helped my friend with the turbo micra alot.....he too is going down the Nistune route,,,,heard alot off good things about it. Am i right in thinking it runs along side the stock ecu like a father board or something?
If your going for 350bhp i need to go in it .....Simon i still havnt been in yours either!
Ow and Simon and munkul can you both settle something for me....the SR20...do they run rockers/rollers in the head for the cam gear that are prone to cracking and breaking???
thanks
jason

Re: My s14
they run rocker arms, not heard two many stories of them breaking unless they are fitted with things like bee r rev limiters with the way they work. Only problems are valve springs are a little week so if running higher boost levels specially with some tubular manifolds these will need changing. Only other issues with the sr's is rattling vvt sprockets (although this is sometimes the valve not the sprocket) and oil spray bars becoming clogged if oil is not changed enough.
Oh and Jason i'll take you out in it once i've sorted a couple of little niggles out, just got to get rid of my other car and then rebuild my mountain bike so i can get to work in day ok lol. But will be ready with niggles sorted by end of october latest.
Munkel also while i remember I've got an s14a vortex style front bumber for you can have for a good price if your interested when you go down the s14a route, its the one thats on my car at moment.

Re: My s14
cheers for the info
power wise i think 280 ponies would keep me happy, its just that i like tinkering lol. A custom HX30 build would be easy after what ive done with the punto, and some lads on driftworks are getting good results - even using the larger HX35 at low boost, keeping power around 380bhp and they say its well driveable. Its just the cost - i think i could probably do it for about £2k not including mapping fees, but can i really leave the car to linger in the shed all winter while i do it? lol
I already have a 2.5" exhaust turbo-back system (probably restrictive cos it aint that loud), stock turbo elbow. I have an blitz style FMIC kit coming, also am looking at fuel pumps, so perhaps i should just do 1a for cost-effectiveness for now.
Part of me wants to go all out on the car and not even drive it properly til it is up to the spec i want, but part of me knows that i have a much greater chance of writing it off that way....
about the bumper - its not really the style im after, but it also depends on what price

Re: My s14
These all fall into one of the following categories: Power, Cooling, Handling, or Bling.
New Auto Extreme FMIC kit
New Autogauge gauges - oil temp and pressure, and boost
S/H Koyorad alloy radiator
New Nismo gearbox mount
S/H Walbro 255lph fuel pump
S/H Nismo sill plates
S/H ARC titanium cooling duct
S/H Apex stainless intake pipe
New ball and spring boost valve
New Daiyama fully adjustable coilovers
Coilies are fairly cheap but have right spring rates and are used by Japspeed in their top drift/grip cars, so cant be too bad! Rebound dampening, spring preload, camber and height adjustable, solid top mounts.
Stuff:
Stuff done (not all of it done yet!):
Fitting the FMIC was a pain since everything had to be chopped to suit, including the kit itself. Bumper chopped right back and made into wide-mouth. BOV blanked off because i like the chatter, and i wanted to see if the standard BOV was leaking any boost.
Coilies set properly with preload etc, and tracked/cambered up this afternoon. (2.8 degrees camber front, 1.8 degrees rear, the bugger wont let me go any less! Needs adjustable arms next!) Just need to balance front and rear heights now.
Now looks like:
Funny seeing it real life, it is a very low down car, a good bit lower than even the rex! Coilies are very stiff but not spine-shaking, which is good - dampening is set about in the middle for now.
Oh yeah and the punto battery had to be borrowed because the FMIC cold pipe has to go through the battery tray! I bought a nissan Micra battery which most people use, but it must have been wrong cos it didnt fit.
Still very much a WIP. I want to buy some silicon rad hoses before i fit the rad, and also ive decided that Jez 1a chip is the way forward for now - just need to get hold of one! Also rear camber arms and a few more bits as well.
It feels "strong on plough" as it is and wheelspins in 3rd in the wet if pushed so i think it will have pretty much enough power lol

Re: My s14
cheers, aye i dont want to spend the money insuring both punto and s14 at the same time, so im spending the money on mods instead atm! I have 1/2 mile of private tarmac for testing stuff out on the farm, although not as satisfying as a proper road
Needs rear camber arms before its any good for the road anyways.
Its gonna take a lot of respect and self-discipline for me not to write it off though!

private tarmac ey......i wish i had abit off that then id be able to play with the cinq without it costing me an arm and a leg to sit on the drive lol.
I now what you mean though, rear drive and big power can be so.......whats the word....dangerous! haha but the most fun!, a freind off mine had an RX7 twin turbo running around 300bhp and it caught him off guard on a roundabout, it was destroyed
But its really is sweet mate, the wheels, the stance, the spec and the potential.....i want!
thanks
jason
Re: My s14
this is now on the road as of today.... had to raise it up a bit at the back to avoid so much camber though!
Reason being that the punto is in the bodyshop so ideal time to try this out before the winter...
It is an animal. Nuff said. It spins up easy enough in corners in the dry, dreading the wet tbh....
