MX 5 The current Project
This is the current toy, it is a 99 1.8 Mazda MX-5, great car in its own right but just not quick enough for me
So the start was adding a Jackson Racing Eaton M45 supercharger along with a power card Pro to look after the additional on boost fuelling. On top of this I fitted a J&S Ultra safeguard timing controller this retards the Timing on boost and provided additional retardation on knock detection this gave ~5psi of boost. Also at this point I had to upgrade the rubber from 185/60/14 to 205/45/16's to get the power onto the road
This was better but not good enough so... added a larger overlay pulley to spin the charger faster, this gave over 9 psi but with loads of det. Also added at this time was a custom stainless duel exhaust
To combat the det I fitted a PWR charge-cooler barrel along with a high flow water pump and massive radiator, header and water wetter, this resulted in 7.6psi of icy cold air. Just make things a bit safer I also added Water/Methanol injection which now means I don't have to do any on boost retarding of the ignition.
Only today I have finished dual throttle body conversion which counteracts some of the downsides of the long inlet tract of the Supercharger and gives instant throttle response.
So the future plans... I have a weapon X coil on plug conversion ready and waiting that should go within the next month, this should make a nice big spark and a bigger bang going from 20,000 to 60,000 volts

MX5
This car is a sensation, i have the great honour to say ive driven it!! although it was in the earlyier 180bhp ish spec i believe, it was quick! drove like a torquey N/A and that supercharger made my arm hairs stand up it sounds fantastic, but better than everthing is the way this thing drives, its on rails and the steering is perfect, the steering wheel is as big as a pee which makes it even better, i realy good fun car this i love it.

It does shift ,and it goes around corners just as well
The noise of the charger though makes old people think they are being dive bombed it just sends a shiver up you spine. If I could only stretch to a better fuelling solution I'd be spinning it even faster
I always say a super charger makes noise as you go faster a turbo makes a noise when you lift off

Re: MX 5 The current Project
A quick update on this as it is a constantly evolving project
Smaller nose pulley has now been fitted giving a couple more PSI of boost so now up to 9.6psi. This has made an astonishing difference to the performance so much so that the clutch is now slipping (so saving the pennies for a spec stage 2 clutch now) and the car just screams, it sound just like a Stuka
I have also added a recirculating dump valve to compliment the duel TB conversion.
Sat in the garage waiting to be fitted is a new set of coilovers. I just wanted to lower and stiffen the car slightly to help stop the squatting and diving as the standard suspension is probably passed it's best after 11 years. Once my dodgy knee stops playing up i'll get around to fitting then

Very impressive id love to see and feel the power these days as it had a fair bit done since last time!, got to be over 200bhp?? with loads off torque from the charger!?
cant wait to see it on the coilovers, youll be cornering like an f1 car haha, it felt tight as a nut when i drove it aswell.....still my favourite car in term off how it drives this car!! never been happy with mine since i drove the 5 thats why im investing in handling mods haha so thanks for that
Good work keep it up and give me a bell if you need a hand

Re: MX 5 The current Project
I really shouldn't have time off work it is very bad for my wallet
Some changes happening in the next few weeks, The charge cooler is going to be replaced by a FMIC, now the Dual TB's are on it means I can run as big a cooler as I want.
The cooling system has been a bit stressed with all the extra heat being generated (plus the rad was rotten) so while I am going to have all the front end apart to remove the charge cooler rad and fit the FMIC I have grabbed an ebay bargain and gone for a 52mm dual core alloy race spec radiator along with a slimline fan to allow a bit more room for running the intercooler pipework. These rads are meant to give 40% more cooling capacity which should be fine for now
The new clutch should be arriving soon with any luck it has been on back order as I have gone for the new Spec stage 2+ clutch which is Kevlar one side and ceramic on the other which gives a standard feel but can cope with a lot more torque

sounds good....things are looking up for the mazda rocket!
probably a really good move going for the fmic in the long run and i suppose it will allow for more future mods with added safty?

Re: MX 5 The current Project
Well not everything has gone quite to plan,
The FMIC kit needs a rethink as thanks to all the various mods there is no easy way of getting the pipes out of the side of the engine bay into the nose of the car, so am going to have to look at lowering the radiator and going over that radiator instead, so the charge cooler is going back in for now.
The twin core radiator is in but I've had to switch to a slimline fans as the standard fans wouldn't fit
Finally still no new clutch, but apparently they should be back in stock next week.

Re: MX 5 The current Project
Guess it's time for a mini update,
FMIC was a no go in the end as i couldn't get everything in place without doing major surgery, so I have refitted the charge cooler and upgraded it's pump and cooling rad instead and in time honoured tradition used the radiator from an MPI Seicento.
The new alloy engine rad is working out well with a higher pressure cap and things are a lot cooler now (might look at an oil cooler later in the year too)
the coil overs are still sat at the back of the garage to do and I still haven't sorted the clutch thanks to my crazy job and dodgy knee. I have however managed to overhaul the brakes with new disks all round and fitted Axxis ULT pads to make it stop as well as it goes.
Slightly larger injectors are now in (320's instead of 270's) and of course fuel consumption is now down as a result, but as the car doesn't get a lot of use that is not a big issues (i filled it up today for the first time since before the November snows )

Sorry to hear about the FMIC, this is the seem issues i had with mine but with me being a ,little crazy i didnt mind having it stuck out front haha.
Good job with the charge cooler bits, mind you with that and the W.I i bet the inlet temps are pretty sound anyway aernt they?
Thanks

Hi Jason.
yes life is pretty mad at the minute, loads of crap going on at home and thanks to the job I'm permanently jet lagged and have a cold that just won't budge at the minute, there is no signs of the travelling getting less in the near future either still it's good for the air miles
The cooler is doing a fine job the PWR barrel is rated for a hell of a lot more power than I'll ever want to get out of the car so I reckon the intake temps would be fine anyway just with that, the WI just gives that extra margin of safety

Re: MX 5 The current Project
Ah well it had to happen
there is only so long that you can keep playing with things before you reach a point where you have to decide the reality and practicality of the next move
Anyway had a few test drives in Porsche Boxters and that has made up my mind
so........Just ordered a Megasquirt for the MX5 and fooking huge 750cc injectors
Flaming fireball through a hedge backwards here i come

It has a Supercharger on it
Re: MX 5 The current Project
I'm aiming for a reliable (and smooth) 230bhp which should be achievable, the super charger is an M45 and already spun within an inch of it's life so the only way i can get more power than now is with better tuning. The problem with the current set up is that it is a bit crude which can make for some interesting tail happiness so hopefully the MS will help here
I've gone for an MS2 with sequential injection and VICS control and it will be complete plug and play
